Ellen Svenningsen, Wood Crafter & Cabinetmaker, UK
I am Ellen Svenningsen. I grew up in Copenhagen and later moved to London. Eventually I went to study bench joinery at the Building Crafts College, where I was able to merge my passion for objects and craft. These days, I design and make furniture and fine objects in small production runs, alongside bespoke commissions and chair seat restoration, in my workshop in St Leonards-on-Sea. Each piece is handcrafted, and I mill the timber myself to maintain complete control over grain selection and final finish. My approach is to keep the design quietโfocused on structural integrity and outer simplicityโallowing a single detail, whether a refined form, a subtle shift in proportion, or an exposed joint, to reveal the making.
Why do you use Danish cord?
When restoring original chairsโoften sourced from Denmarkโitโs extremely important to stay as true to the original as possible. For that reason, the cord has to be right. Iโve found the Danish cord from Original Danish Cord to be the closest and most authentic match to original materials, both in look and feel.
I also use their cord on my own furniture designs. The quality is consistently excellent, the FSC certification is important to me, and the service is outstanding. Delivery is always fast and reliable, which makes a real difference in a small workshop.

How do you use Danish Cord?
One example is the J Stool. The J Stool can be made from various hardwoodsโoak, elm, chestnut, or appleโselected for durability and character. Its gently curved seat is hand-woven with traditional Danish paper cord and rests on tapered legs, blending sculptural elegance with ergonomic comfort.
The name comes from its first commissioner, Jordan, who helped bring a long-held sketch into reality.

Iโve found the Danish cord from Original Danish Cord to be the closest and most authentic match to original materials, both in look and feel.
